
Quick Start of List Direct
List Direct is a program designed for mailing list use. To use it process your mailing list, please following the below steps. Before begin this tutorial, we suggest you take a look of the tutorial "Working with main window" first.
STEP 1: Edit your profile.
STEP 2: Create a new list.
STEP 3: Add contacts to list.
STEP 4: Write a new mail.
STEP 5: Before send out mails, set the options for mail delivery.
STEP 6: Send out mail list.
STEP 1: Edit your profile.
Your profile is the details of yourself, include name, company, email address and so on. Part of these information will appear in mail header, and all information can be used as variants inserted into mail contents.
To open the Profile Manager, click the "Profiles" button on the outlook-style bar or select menu "Tools->Profiles...", then the profile manager dialog will appear.
Click the "New" button to add your information.
Profile Name is only for management purpose only, and it will be used where you need use profile. Sender Name and Email Address will appear in the mail header as FROM information. If you have a special reply address, you may specify it here. After edited your information, click OK to save the profile.
STEP 2: Create a new list.
Click the "Create a new maillist" button on the toolbar or select menu "File -> New -> Mail List" to add a new maillist.

Then the list information edit dialog will appear, and you need enter the name and description of the list.

Each list must have a unique name. After enter the information, click OK to save the list. It will appear in the list grid of main window.
STEP 3: Add contacts to list.
To manage the contacts of a list, you need select the list first. Then all its contacts will list in the contacts grid. You can add, edit and delete the contacts. There are two ways to add contacts to a list. One way is directly enter the contact's information by hand. Click the "Add a contact" button on toolbar, the Contact Information dialog will appear.

There are five pages on the dialog to record the detail information of a contact. The Email Address is required and can't be blank. And it must be unique in one list. Duplicated email address can not be add to the same list. You can verify a email address by click the Verify button to check if the email address is available. All other information is not required, but we suggest you enter the necessary information, because all these information can be inserted into mail contents as variants. You may use variants in a mail, and these variants will be replaced with the real information of each contact when the mail is being sent out.
Another way to add contacts is import contacts from outer source. This is suit for add a batch of contacts. To know more about this, please see: Import contacts into List Direct.
STEP 4: Write a new mail.
After finished building your mail list, you may send mails to your contacts. Click the "Create a new mail" button on the toolbar or select menu "File -> New -> Mail Message" to open the mail editor.
The mail editor is similar to Outlook Express, and easy to use.
The To field is selected from exist mailing lists. The From field is selected from profiles. Other contents are the same as normail mails, but you can insert variants into mail contents. These variants will be replaced with the detail information of each contact, and generate personalized mail and send to recipients. To insert variants, select menu "Merge" and select the variant you want to insert. To know more about merge data into mails, please see: Use variants in mail.
If you have finished mail editing and ready to send the mail, click the "Send" button on toolbar, and this mail will be placed in the Outbox category. If you want to save this mail and send it later, you may click the "Save" button, then the mail will be saved into the Drafts category.
STEP 5: Before send out mails, set the options for mail delivery.
Before send out mails, you need set the options for mail delivery. List Direct delivery mails in two ways: Direct Delivery and SMTP Relay.
Direct delivery means List Direct will directly send your mail to recipients, no SMTP server needed. It requires your set the correct DNS servers in the DNS options.

Sometimes, Direct delivery can not delivery mails successful. The reasons are various, but mostly related to the ISP your are using and the recipients' mail server. If your ISP blocks TCP port 25, then you can not send mail out directly. And, some mail server, like AOL, do not accept mails sent from dynamic IP address. These will cause directly delivery failed. In this case, you may send mail by SMTP Relay.
SMTP Relay means List Direct relay your mails to SMTP servers, like your ISP's SMTP server or the SMTP server of your company. Normally, the ISP's SMTP server are more powerful to send mails out, but they always have limitations on sending mails. 
You can both use Direct Delivery and SMTP Relay for mail sending. List Direct will try to directly send mails out first. If failed, it will try to relay it to the SMTP servers.
STEP 6: Send out mail list.
Now all things ready, you may send out the mails. Click the "Send all mails" button to send out the mails in Outbox.

Then, all mails in outbox will create a task and displayed in the Sending Task window. In this dialog, it will show the details of every task.

There are two page on this window. The Tasks page shows all the task and its state. Click one task, and it will display the task details and sending progress below the grid. The Threads page shows the status of every thread, include direct delivery threads and SMTP relay threads.
When a mail task finished, you may click the "More Details" button to see the mail delivery report.
